Can I buy it?

No

In spring 2015, REI came out with a line of “glamping” products under the evrgrn brand. The best item from this collection was a folding rocking chair called the Campfire Rocker. I saw this product and knew I had to have it. Because of the timing of the product launch, we added a pair to our wedding registry. But at $99 each, and having frugal friends, no one purchased the chairs for us. Michael knew I had my heart set on them so on July 1st, just in time for our annual Independence Day camping trip, “The Bears of Summer,” he came home with a pair.

The chairs were a hit! Everyone was so jealous! And we were very comfy.

Prior to these chairs, Michael and I owned a total of 0 folding chairs, camp chairs, and lawn chairs. When we went camping we’d sit on the picnic bench, someone elses’ chair, or a blanket on the ground. Why didn’t we own camp chairs? A theme I’m sure will soon emerge on this blog is how the combination of being adverse to spending money on things for ourselves and the current state-of-the-art products not appealing to us or meeting our needs left us chairless for years.

But within the same year of the chair’s release, they were recalled due to the fall hazard posed by the rockers. The recall round allowed us to replace our original pair with a brand new set with a little dimple in the bolt to prove it’s upgraded design. This was lucky because on our annual Ithaca family camping trip, one of the plastic sockets cracked when the support post was not fully inserted and the chair was sat on. So now we had two more of the $99 chairs! The replacement chairs had flatter rocker blades and soon no true rocking chairs were being sold as camp/folding chairs. You’ll see fancy hydraulic gliders and crazy suspended hammock chairs, but no rockers!

Our replacement pair are still going strong, although the canvas has faded quite a bit from the sun. The tipping risk is still at large: a toddler cannot get in or out of one of these chairs on their own. So keep your eyes peeled when camping with kids! They’re a must pack for all of our car camping trips and picnics.
